Teen denies dangerous driving on Dundee’s busiest roads while chased by police

Dundee Sheriff Court.
Dundee Sheriff Court.

A Dundee teenager will stand trial accused of driving dangerously on some of the city’s busiest roads while being pursued by police.

Lewis Raitt, 18, has been charged with driving at a “grossly excessive” speed for the traffic conditions, repeatedly overtaking vehicles at excessive speed and near junctions, as well as going through red lights at the junction of Clepington Road and Forfar Road.

He also allegedly overtook vehicles on the nearside on the Kingsway, repeatedly crossed the centre line of the carriageway into the path of oncoming traffic and overtook vehicles on the Pitkerro Road roundabout.

These actions were said to have caused other drivers to take emergency avoidance action to prevent a collision.

Raitt, of Brackens Road, has pled not guilty to the charge, which was said to have taken place on August 8 on a journey between the Hilltown and Old Craigie Road, while the accused was being signalled to stop by a police vehicle with lights and sirens.

The charge states that Raitt had also been requested to stop the vehicle before the alleged chase.

He was on bail at the time, granted on December 1 at Dundee Sheriff Court.

Raitt will stand trial on May 29, with an intermediate diet fixed for May 7.
