Montrose made it two wins out of two under new manager Stewart Petrie with a hard-fought victory over Berwick at Shielfield.

The win lifted the visitors three places up the League 2 table and afterwards the Links Park boss was full of praise for his players – but said there was still a lot of work to be done.

“Two wins out of two is a dream start,” he said.

“But as everyone can see it is very tight in the bottom half of the table and there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to do.

“At 1-1 we could have settled for the draw, but we decided to stick with two strikers, and it paid dividends, with two substitutes combining for the winning goal.

“I am a believer that substitutes can win you between 10 and 15 points a season, and this was a prime example of that.

“It’s a team game, about a squad playing together, so it’s not always about the 11 who start.”

Ryan Ferguson shot Montrose in front 11 minutes into the second half, with sub Jonny Court netting the winner after Michael McKenna had equalised for Rangers.

McKenna hit the outside of a post on 10 minutes, while Rangers keeper Kevin Walker had to make a good reaction save from Gary Fraser.

It wasn’t until the 36th minute that Montrose had another serious threat, defender Paul Watson sending a shot over Walker’s crossbar after his initial free-kick struck the wall and rebounded to him.

Watson again showed his shooting prowess with a screamer just before half-time, but his 30-yard effort was always going wide.

The breakthrough came when Ryan Ferguson slammed the ball into the net to give Montrose the lead after 56 minutes.

On 64 minutes Rangers got themselves back on level terms when Darren Lavery made a break through the middle and slipped the ball for McKenna to net as he cut in from the left.

Montrose regained the initiative after 79 minutes when substitute Chris Templeman crossed from the left and fellow sub Court glanced in a header at the near post for what proved to be the winning goal.

Two minutes into injury time Jordyn Sheerin fired the ball into the net for Rangers but his effort was disallowed for offside.
