Dundee strongly linked with move for one-time England international

Dundee have been strongly linked with a move for one-time England international Steven Caulker.

The 26-year-old is a free agent after leaving latest club QPR at the end of December and has been training with Luton Town since.

The Hatters are reported to have offered him a deal and Caulker has also been talking to clubs in China and Turkey.

Now Dundee have been added to the list of possible destinations for a player who was once rated as one of the top young centre-halves in the English game.

It understood there has been contact between his representatives and the Dark Blues.

Caulker originally came through the youth ranks at Spurs and was tipped for a glittering career with them and England, for whom he has one cap.

He also made five appearances in the Great Britain side that took part in the 2012 Olympics in London, his home town.

In the past few years his progress has been halted by disciplinary breaches the player himself admitted were down to problems with alcohol, gambling and depression.

That was a factor to his departure from Spurs five years ago and while he joined QPR he’s had spells out on loan, including at Liverpool, during his time there.

Last summer saw him linked with Celtic, whose manager Brendan Rodgers had him at Swansea during a loan spell from Spurs.

If he was to sign up at Dens it would almost certainly be on a short-term deal until the end of the season.

Manager Neil McCann has been on the hunt for central defenders since Jack Hendry’s deadline day move to Celtic and last week fixed up Angolan international Genseric Kusunga, also on a short-term deal.
