Dundee United lacked focus in Brechin disappointment says gaffer Csaba

Honest Csaba Laszlo has admitted he was amazed Dundee United did not take all three points at Brechin on Saturday.

But the Tangerines gaffer also admitted he wouldn’t have been surprised if his side had lost in the end.

United came away from Glebe Park with just a point, despite having an astonishing 72% possession.

In the first half that figure was probably close to 80% as the home team were run ragged by the Tangerines slick passing.

All United had to show for that was a Scott McDonald goal and, when Sean Crighton headed home from a corner for the equaliser less than two minutes into the second half, their dominance had been wasted.

As his team pressed for the winner, McDonald did miss a sitter, but Csaba was well aware two great saves from Harry Lewis at the death were needed to stop all three points being lost.

“It was two different halves. I think in the first half we were very dominant and I think we also had to score two goals more even,” he said.

Dundee United striker Scott McDonald (left) celebrates with Willo Flood after opening the scoring against Brechin.

“In the second half, definitely, we come out and there was this corner they scored from and it took a lot of confidence out of the team.

“I am disappointed, but you also must be happy that you get the draw because also the opponent, if you saw the game, they had one good shot at the end and one free-kick very well saved.

“I am just also disappointed because a lot of fans were up here to see the team and support the team and they went back with the pain and the truth that we lost two points.

“We are disappointed. Somehow after so much control and so many chances the players were on the bus thinking ‘oh my goodness we have lost two points’.

“This is painful but, in football, you have to work so hard for the victory and must be focused and I think in the second half we were not focused enough.”

United now face Dunfermline at Tannadice on Saturday and will be without influential defender Tam Scobbie.

He was sent off in injury time for a second yellow when he pulled back Connor McLennan.

Csaba had his doubts over whether or not that decision was fair.

“I did not think it was a red card. Maybe yes, we have to check.

“We have lost a good player, Scobbie, he is out. We have a replacements, William Edjenguele or Paul Quinn with get the chance.”
