Bernard Murphy succeeding Patrick Elsmie as Gleneagles Hotel MD

Bernard Murphy succeeding Patrick Elsmie as Gleneagles Hotel MD

The managing director of Gleneagles Hotel is to step down after 20 years.

While Patrick Elsmie will take a back seat from day-to-day operations, he will continue his association with the Ryder Cup host venue in a part-time director-level role.

Bernard Murphy who has been the hotel’s general manager since 2007 and previously worked with RBS, Compass and Intercontinental Hotels will succeed Mr Elsmie in the top job.

The departure marks the end of one of the most intersting periods in the 90-year history of the landmark hotel.

During his tenure, Gleneagles has played host to the rich and famous and has been the venue for a succession of high-profile events, such as the controversial G8 summit of 2005.

However, the standout event in his time at the hotel was last month’s Ryder Cup.

Mr Elsmie said last night: “I know I am fortunate to have been part of this iconic hotel’s history and am pleased to hand over to Bernard Murphy.

“Bernard has been a great support to me over the years and I know he will take Gleneagles forward in the future.”

Gleneagles chairman and director of Diageo in Scotland, Peter Lederer, said Mr Elsmie had made a huge contribution to the hotel and its standing as a global tourism icon.

“Gleneagles simply wouldn’t be where it is today without Patrick’s commitment and professionalism.”
