The coloured cracker Dolly XIII continued her winning ways when she lifted the Mason Memorial Trophy for the supreme light horse in-hand at Braco Show.
Presented in memory of Bob, Mindy and Nick Mason, of the Tullibardine Stud, the final line-up was fittingly well supported by Welsh-bred ponies.
However, ultimately judge Mary McCall Smith, from Connachan, Crieff, said the leading coloured in-hand was simply the one that she would most like to take home from the line-up of champions.
Owned and shown by Rebecca Copland, from Cupar, Dolly XIII had come to Braco having already stood supreme both in-hand and under saddle at the CHAPS Scottish regional show, as well as reserve supreme at both Angus Show and the Festival of Champions at Highfield at Howe.
“She would surely be everyone’s dream pony,” Ms McCall Smith said of the 10-year-old traditional mare. “She has a lovely outlook, good conformation and was just a very easy-going mare,” she added.
Lifting the overall in-hand reserve was Arlene Sommerville’s former rescue pony Major Attitude.
“This pony performed fantastically and looks great for its age,” added Ms McCall Smith.
The-17-year-old grey Welsh section A, of unknown breeding, which was rescued as an 11-year-old, is only very lightly shown but has qualified for the Scottish Veteran Finals for the last two years in succession.
Also in with a shout for the supreme in-hand contest was the reserve veteran in-hand champion, Shonah Wood’s 15-year-old Welsh part-bred Tufty and the in-hand hunter Abisag, from the Solaris Stud.
In the judging of the overall hunter, ridden champion Master Klass proved a class act for Balloch rider Sam Burkhill.
“He’s a lovely, forward going, mannerly hunter,” said judge Martin Adams, from Fyvie. “He looks strong and capable enough to carry a rider all day and ultimately he’s just a very nice package.
“He was nicely ridden and he performed well throughout the day.”
This 11-year-old son of Master Imp has this season qualified for the Royal International as both a small hunter and as an amateur. Additionally, the partnership this year stood supreme horse at Campsie, hunter champion and reserve intermediate at Doune and Dunblane, champion at Stirling and top of the intermediates at Puddledub Spring. Last season he lifted the intermediate championship at the Royal Highland.
Mr Adams brought the in-hand leader from the Solaris Stud, Abisag, forward as overall hunter reserve.
“She’s a nice quality mare,” he said of the broodmare by San Remo, which was shown with foal Kharisma SSH at foot.
During the afternoon Follywood Diamonte proved herself a double championship winner for Shonah Wood, surpassing supreme in-hand horse Dolly XIII to lift the overall coloured championship and also topping the ridden veteran entry.
The 15-year-old Welsh part-bred, sired by Pentrepiod Welsh Flyer, was earlier this season a bronze medal winner at the North of Scotland Welsh Cob and Pony Association Show, and was also overall coloured recently at Alyth.
Young rider Hilary Cowie also took two championship rosettes from the show pony ring, winning the championship with Woodview Inspiration and the mini tricolour with Oranmore Sweet Millie.
