The final tally of Arbroath’s Relay for Life is £103,939.

The announcement was made at Pleasureland where the committee and supporters gathered for the evening.

Relay chairman Ian Angus also announced next year’s event will be held on September 17 and 18, with fundraising already under way.

Mr Angus said the committee was meeting to kick-start planning for what will be the 10th Relay for Life in Arbroath, which he has promised will be “extra-special”.

“Team captains and committee members are buzzing with loads of great new ideas for what is already looking like an extra-special weekend,” he said.

“We now have the date and teams have been submitting suggestions for the theme, which will be voted on and announced quite soon.

“We know from previous years that participants really embrace the theme and will go the extra mile with their outfits and team banners.”

Mr Angus said this year’s total swelled considerably from the interim total announced on September 20.

Relay for Life highlights the local dimension of what is a national and international campaign to find a cure for cancer.

He added: “There are many local people who have reason to be grateful for the cutting-edge research undertaken in Dundee and at the other labs in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. I know our own family circumstances would be radically different without the ground-breaking discoveries made by CRUK scientists.”

He paid tribute to everyone who took part and donated, saying every pound raised means researchers are a step closer to beating cancer.
