Montrose Golf Links has cried foul at dog mess being left on the course by irresponsible owners.
The club has reported an increase in dirty deeds at the course over the winter months.
Company secretary Claire Penman has issued a plea for dog walkers to use dedicated bins, which are located at the major access points to the Links.
Her comments come after The Courier revealed last week that there had been a 76% increase in the number of fixed penalty notices issued by community wardens in relation to dog fouling.
Claire said: “The winter days have resulted in an increase of dog fouling over Montrose Golf Links.
“This is not a new problem but after the recent period of cold weather, the problem has increased dramatically.
“Possibly, more people used the Links during the period of adverse weather, with no golfers about, and didn’t know where the poo bins were located.
“There are red bins close to the major points of access to the Links, and the greenkeeping staff do a very good, if unpleasant, job of emptying them.
“There is also a poo bag dispenser situated beside the Curlie area.”
She added: “Many of the visiting and local golfers who have managed to play the courses have been aghast at the amount of dog excrement, especially in the Curlie and Gates area.”
Montrose councillor Bill Duff said he and other elected members receive a lot of complaints from constituents about dog fouling, which he described as a “blight on our towns and public areas”.
He said: “Angus Council takes the issue very seriously with an effective team of community wardens who patrol the county in search of offenders.
“There is also a dedicated employee who uses the ‘pooper scooper’ to tidy up the mess in the worst affected areas.
“I am asking dog owners in Montrose to do the decent thing and tidy up after their pets.”
The fixed penalty for dog fouling is £40, which rises to £60 if it is not paid within 28 days.
The offence can also be reported to the procurator fiscal.
