A pair of Angus brothers were beaten by another set of siblings after an all-day drinking session turned sour.

Connor McGregor, 20, and Robert McGregor, 19, assaulted Gary and Ainslie Tyndal on November 24 during a disagreement in the street over alcohol.

The assault prompted a flurry of commentary on social media in its aftermath, as friends and residents messaged the parties involved.

The men appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court where depute fiscal Muhammad Sadiq said both complainers were left with black eyes after being punched repeatedly on Barry Road, Carnoustie.

They had been out in Carnoustie and had been drinking until 1am on November 24 and were “heavily under the influence of alcohol”.

“They encountered the accused and asked them for a drink,” he said.

“The accused refused and there were words exchanged and a scuffle proceeded to break out.

“An independent witness saw the incident, and the complainers were both punched repeatedly on the head. Police were called and both the complainers were traced at Barry Road.”

The accused were cautioned at their homes on December 14.

Appearing for Connor McGregor, solicitor Norman Fraser said he would wait until sentencing to give mitigating statements.

He said: “To be candid to the court, Mr McGregor is on a community payback order which came after the date of this offence, so I will reserve my position.”

Previous convictions were admitted for Robert McGregor and his defence agent Nick Whelan agreed, saying: “I assume milord would like to deal with both brothers on the same date?”

Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence to October 9 for the preparation of reports for Connor McGregor.

Connor McGregor, of Andownie Road, Arbroath, admitted assaulting Gary Tyndal, punching him on the face and body, and knocking him to the ground to his injury on November 24 on Barry Road.

Robert McGregor, of Wallace Street, Carnoustie, admitted assaulting Ainslie Tyndal, punching him on the face and body, and knocking him to the ground to his injury.

The McGregor brothers had been due to go to trial along with co-accused Ryan Gilbert, 20, and Declan Wanless, 23, who had not guilty pleas accepted by the Crown.
