Forfar man assaulted youth worker who tried to protect teens

A man has admitted a double assault outside a Forfar youth centre in which he twisted the breast of a staff member who stepped in to protect youngsters involved in the fracas.

Janis Solovjovs and a friend had been walking past the Pitstop on Academy Street when they offered drink to a group standing outside but the incident took a nasty turn when the 32-year-old became aggressive after a youth worker tried to move them on.

Solovjovs, of Priory Court, Forfar, admitted two charges of assault when he appeared before Sheriff Gregor Murray at the town’s sheriff court.

Depute fiscal Jill Drummond said the incident happened shortly before 10pm on December 17. Solovjovs and a friend were heard shouting at people nearby before they walked towards the group outside the premises and asked if they would like a drink from a bottle they were holding.

The youth worker came out of the Pitstop and told the young people to go home because the premises were closing, then also asked the two men to move on.

“For an unknown reason the accused then pushed one (16-year-old) witness on his chest, resulting in him falling against the building,” said Ms Drummond.

“The accused then approached the other witness and as he got close she put her hand out to push him away. He grabbed her right wrist and pushed it backwards.”

Solovjovs had briefly released his grip but then approached the youth worker again and squared up to her.

The fiscal added: “He managed to grab her right breast and twisted it.”

Police were then called and when charged with assaulting the teenager Solovjovs replied: “If I did that I’m sorry about that.”

In relation to the attack on the woman, he told officers: “I’m not happy about this charge.”

The court heard that the youth worker suffered from fibromyalgia and bending her arm had been painful.

Sheriff Gregor Murray deferred sentence until March 10 for a criminal justice report.
