16 and out for crimewave teenager

Serial offender Dylan Fergusson was sent to custody at Forfar Sheriff Court.
Serial offender Dylan Fergusson was sent to custody at Forfar Sheriff Court.

An Angus teenager has been given a custodial sentence for 495 days for 16 different offences.

Dylan Robert Fergusson had previously been placed on a high tariff structured deferred sentence for his catalogue of crimes.

However, a breach of the peace offence committed last month sealed the 18-year-old’s fate.

Sheriff Gregor Murray told him he had been given “every possible assistance” from social workers and other agencies to get his life back on track.

Fergusson admitted committing 19 offences over a period of 19 months during his one-man crimewave.

Among the offences was playing music at a Brechin flat so loud that two police officers were asked to attend the address in Clerk Street on February 24 last year.

He then refused to stop playing the music when asked to do so by police.

He was then taken to the West Bell Street Police Station in Dundee to be detained, where he threatened to assault them if he ever met them alone.

He also previously admitted stealing electricity as well as numerous bail breaches.

Defence agent Bob Bruce said his client had a “chaotic lifestyle” and had previously had difficulties with legal highs and alcohol.

He made a submission to Sheriff Gregor Murray that Fergusson be sentenced to a restriction of liberty order after a reduction in his rate of offences.

Mr Bruce said: “Clearly even though there has been engagement, there perhaps has not been meaningful engagement.

“He has only committed one offence in the last eight months.

“He has had difficulties with alcohol and legal highs and for someone with such a chaotic lifestyle it’s quite remarkable that he has turned up to all of his appointments,” he said.

“Clearly in his life there are areas to be worked on but a restriction of liberty order might be an appropriate disposal.”

Sheriff Gregor Murray said he acknowledged Fergusson’s rate of offending had slowed but said a custodial sentence was the only appropriate disposal.

After imposing the 495 day sentence, the sheriff said: “You brought this on yourself.

“I hope you come out (of custody) wiser and a more mature person.”
