Residents complain about lack of police presence

Residents of two Dundee communities have raised concerns about a “severe” lack of police on their streets.

North East councillor Brian Gordon highlighted issues with officer visibility and responses to specific incidents in the Whitfield and Mill o’ Mains areas at a public meeting.

He has now welcomed an assurance from a senior policewoman that a new operation will see more officers patrolling communities.

Mr Gordon said: “I have been approached by residents from Whitfield and Mill o’ Mains who have said there is a severe lack of police presence in the area.

“I have been contacted by the folk who have reported incidents where the police have only given them a crime number over the phone with no officer coming to attend.

“One resident from Whitfield emailed me saying their property has been vandalised on multiple occasions.

“I also reported an incident taking place in Mill o’ Mains last Tuesday at 9.30pm, when neighbours raised concerns and have yet to talk to an officer.

“On both occasions, a crime number has been given over the phone.”

Inspector Suzanne Smith, of Police Scotland, said reports are dealt with in relation to their “response grade”.

The launch of Operation Mithril will, she said, see more officers patrolling communities in Dundee and ensure local crimes are dealt with “head on”.
