New taxi rank to tackle Lochee High Street congestion
ByThe Courier Reporter
Lochee could have a new taxi rank on its High Street within weeks to stop cabs having to park on double yellow lines.
Residents have complained about taxis causing congestion in the area, because they are using an unofficial rank.
A queue of taxis can often be seen stretching round from High Street on to Bank Street, on double yellow lines and at a bus stop.
Michael Grossi, owner of Grossi’s Laundrette on Lochee High Street, said: “Bank Street is a disaster. They had all the space in the world to build a nice, wide road which would accommodate a bus hub, taxi rank, and traffic.
“Instead, they made it very narrow and it’s causing all sorts of problems.”
One taxi driver at the rank said: “We have an agreement with the council to park here until the new rank is in place, which I’m told is in two weeks.”
The rank will start on Lochee High Street and bend 16 metres down Bank Street.
Lochee councillor Alan Ross insists moves are being made to sort the problem.
He said: “There are plans to extend the current taxi rank and have an overflow area on the site of the old Highgate shopping centre in Sinclair Street.”
