Rival restaurants in Dundee have reached an agreement over their name dispute.

Feelings between the owners of Chopstix Restaurant and Chopstix Noodle Bars have gone from sour to sweet after they decided Dundee is big enough for both of them.

Steve Chow was stirred at the thought of customers confusing his 10-year-old Chopstix restaurant on St Andrews Street with the new Chopstix Noodle Bar opening in the Overgate.

He asked the newcomer to Dundee to change its name, but Sam Elia, managing partner of Chopstix Noodle Bars, refused.

Mr Elia explained he has registered the name of his fast-food restaurant chain as a trademark and is extending the eateries throughout the UK.

The two men met in Dundee this week and their talks ended amicably.

Mr Chow said: “We are both continuing to trade under our names in Dundee. Mr Elia’s business has registered its name and I realised it would be too complicated and costly for me to continue with my challenge.

“He has a growing chain of noodle bars throughout the UK, and I said OK, just continue, but remember to keep up the quality of your business.”

Mr Elia said: “I got on well with Mr Chow. We wished each other all the best for the future.”

Although the entire name of Chopstix Noodle Bar, which opened at the Overgate on Friday, was registered as a trademark, the word ‘chopstix’ can’t be trademarked because it is regarded as generic.
