Michelle Sales returned from holiday to find her home at Ashludie Steadings had been targeted. The mum is just one of the victims affected by similar thefts. Police statistics show there were 1,313 reported instances of housebreaking in the area during 2012-13. Michelle said: “It’s heartbreaking to be honest. Very sentimental jewellery was taken.” Some of the stolen items belonged to Michelle’s first husband Keith who died from leukaemia in 1989, aged just 22. “It’s always been with me,” she said. “It was a bit of him that I had left.” Michelle had taken her children Danielle, 13, and Jamie, 16, to Lanzarote for a fortnight. A friend was checking in on the house while the family was away, but did not notice anything amiss. Thieves had prised an entire pane of glass away from a window, leaving no debris. They also made off with cash Michelle had saved. “Unfortunately the cash is not covered by the insurance,” she said. “Normally it would’ve been banked but it was circumstances at the moment.”
