Tributes paid to Lochee newspaper vendor after sudden death

Tributes have been paid to a homeless newspaper vendor who was a well-known face in Lochee High Street.

Pauline Smith, 55, collapsed in a shop on Monday and was rushed to Ninewells Hospital, where she passed away.

It is understood she suffered a heart attack shortly after finishing a shift at her uniquely fashioned newspaper kiosk.

Danny Forbes, of Furniture Factory on Lochee High Street, said: “Pauline knew everybody she’d often come in and have a cup of tea with me.

“It’s the last thing you expect to happen.”

Sandra Duncan, a bakery manager, said: “She’d come into the bakery and we would chat.

“She did a lot of fundraising for charity and a few times she shaved her head everybody knew her and spoke to her.

“I was talking to her only last week at the bus stop. This has all been very sudden.”

Cliff Robertson, 46, owner of the Sweetie Monster in Lochee, said: “She was at her kiosk all the time, rain or shine.

“Even in winter when it was cold she was in a good mood.

“I’ve known Pauline for about two years. I’d help her put the shutters on her kiosk down and chat to her at the bus stop.

“She was always so concerned about everybody else, but not so much about herself.”

A spokeswoman for DC Thomson added: “She had been a vendor for DC Thomson for many years. She was reliable and hardworking no matter the circumstances or weather she was always there.

“She will be sorely missed in the Lochee area.”
