Supermarket giant Tesco is bringing more than 150 new jobs to Dundee.
The firm will take on the new staff as it expands the workforce at its giant call centre in the city, which deals with millions of customer calls every year.
The latest recruitment drive will bring the number of employees at the Dundee customer engagement centre to 1,150.
Tesco’s announcement will come as a huge boost to the city, where hundreds of jobs are currently under threat.
Lord Provost Bob Duncan said he was “delighted” by the news and though the jobs will not be a like-for-like replacement for the skilled roles being lost, he said they were very much to be welcomed.
He said: “This announcement by Tesco is excellent news. Every job we can bring to this city is to be welcomed. Every single one helps.
“This also shows Tesco’s commitment to the city and that too is to be welcomed.”
Dundee was once home to one of Tesco’s biggest Scottish distribution centres, only for the Kingsway site to be closed in 2006.
That facility and a number of others were centralised with the creation of a giant new distribution hub at Livingston, resulting in the loss of 430 Dundee jobs.
Staffing levels at the customer call centre have also varied, with job losses in 2007 followed by as many as 300 appointments the following year.
The most recent downsizing came last year as a number of business support roles were cut, but the number of customer service posts in the city has been steadily increasing for some time.
