Dundee MSP takes up case after Scottish money refused in England
ByJenny Thomson
A Dundee MSP has written to a major retailer after one of her constituents complained their Scottish banknote was not accepted south of the border.
The shopper claims a Milton Keynes cashier asked “Where is Scotland?” when he attempted to use a Scottish note, and he was left frustrated and embarrassed when he had to walk for 15 minutes to find a cash machine.
The Bank of England says Scottish notes are not strictly “legal tender” in England just as English notes are not in Scotland. However, it advises notes should be accepted on both sides of the border in everyday transactions.
