A 50-year-old woman is fighting for her life today after a fire broke out in a chalet at Thornton Woods Travellers site in Fife last night.
Two men who tried to pull the woman from the burning building also required medical treatment and one was admitted to hospital.
Fire crews were alerted to the blaze around 10.40pm.
They were originally told that a woman was trapped in a caravan but upon arrival discovered she was in a chalet.
It took over an hour for firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to put out the flames using a hosereel.
The victim was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy and later transferred to hospital in Livingston for treatment.
The two men who attempted to rescue her were both treated for the effects of smoke inhalation. One also required hospital treatment.
Police Scotland said the woman’s condition remains “serious” this morning.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded last night following a fire at a travellers site in Kelty.
“A 50-year-old woman was seriously injured and was taken to St John’s Hospital in Livingston by the Scottish Ambulance Service.
“A joint investigation is currently underway to establish the full circumstances of the incident.”
