One of the most scenic parts of St Andrews has been blighted by graffiti over the festive period.

Concern about a large area of graffiti on the seawall at the East Sands and Castle Sands has been raised by the chairman of St Andrews Community Council, Howard Greenwell.

Mr Greenwell drew attention to vandalism on the seawall near the East Sands Leisure Centre, an area on the seawall below St Andrews University’s Gatty Marine Laboratory and at the Castle Sands, an area that has been defaced at the foot of the castle wall.

He said: “The problem seems to have got worse over the holiday period. I have seen some dubious images. I understand Fife Council will only remove it if it’s racist.”

Contacted by The Courier, Fife Council confirmed its policy is to remove all offensive graffiti within 48 hours when it is motivated by prejudice or hate on the grounds of age, disability, gender, race, religion or sexual orientation.

Graffiti can be reported at local council offices, by calling the graffiti removal line on 08451 55 00 22 or emailing graffiti.action@fife.gov.uk.

As graffiti can be treated as a crime of vandalism or malicious damage, consent will be asked for the information given to be shared with police.
