Tributes have been paid to “local legend” Sandy MacKenzie, who worked behind the bar at St Andrews University Students’ Association for many years.
In a letter to students, association president Pat Mathewson said Mr MacKenzie passed away late last week leaving the whole student body, and generations of alumni, with “heavy hearts”.
“A local legend, Sandy began his career at the students’ association 20 years ago as a day shift barman, working his way up to bar manager,” he wrote.
“His service was not one of dedication but rather devotion, an unwavering commitment to bringing joy into the lives of others.
“Despite celebrating his 60th birthday this past year, few days in the union were not warmed by his presence.
“From Freshers Week’s nervous laughter to Grad Ball’s parting tears, it was Sandy’s labour of love that forged countless friendships and cherished memories.
“Sandy’s collection of famously flamboyant ties stood in marked contrast to a man who preferred to stay out of the limelight.
“Working behind the scenes, Sandy’s tireless efforts gave life to the fundraisers, balls, and fashion shows that have become a staple of the St Andrews student experience.
“With steady hand and friendship he helped untold number of students realise their potential, and accomplish projects they never thought possible.”
