St Andrews house behind fundraising effort on the market

A house near St Andrews’ Old Course which raises money for medical research in memory of a baby who died after surgery is up for sale.

The property in The Scores is owned by the grandparents of Madeleine Steel, Judith and Michael Steel, who welcome visitors to their garden in return for donations to the trust set up in her name.

The Madeleine Steel Charitable Trust, known as the Maddy Fund, helps fund research into childhood heart disease.

Madeleine lost her fight for life when she was only five months old, after undergoing essential heart surgery.

The Steels’ garden at 3a Breakers, which is close to the first tee of the course hosting the Open Championship, attracts visitors from all over the world.

Judith said: “Maddy was our first and only granddaughter and she died aged five months from congenital heart disease.

“There is a limit to asking friends and relatives to help with sponsored and other events to raise funds.

“The garden does not depend on friends and relations and we have made quite a lot of money and given a lot of pleasure to people.”

Maddy recovered from a brain haemorrhage just hours after being born in June 2001 but died in November that year.

Her parents Andrew and Veronica set up the trust, which pays for an annual fellowship to gain experience, learn a new technique or conduct research that will benefit children with congenital heart disease.

The garden was designed by an artistic couple who lived on site in an old van while they carried out the work.

Judith said: “They designed the garden with raised boat shaped beds and a winding path, sourcing stone which matched the house.

“They found an off-cut from a stone mason’s yard and carved the garden with the sea and sun on one side and the Celtic design of our daughter’s wedding invitation from 12 years ago on the other side.”

As well as the peaceful garden, the buyer of the four-bedroom house, which has an asking price of £1.1 million, will also be eligible for reduced membership fees for playing the Old Course and the town’s other courses.

The Maddy Fund trust will continue.
