A Perth restaurateur has just returned from an emotional trip to his Nepalese homeland.
Along with his daughter Prabina, Bhola Khanal was determined to do what he could to help after earthquakes devastated the country and claimed the lives of two children from his wife’s wider family.
With the support of the community in Perth who rallied round with donations, the pair set off for a two-week visit to Nepal, laden with aid.
Mr Khanal had already asked his nephew in the country to identify those who were in greatest need of assistance
As well as distributing rice, lentils, beans and oil, they helped dozens of families to construct temporary shelters with the monsoon season approaching.
Mosquito nets, mattresses, sleeping bags and tents were also distributed as people struggled to get their lives back into some sense of order after the tragedy.
What Mr Khanal had not anticipated was the level of fear that still exists about the prospect of further earthquakes.
“People are panicking, more than I expected,” he said.
“The big problem is they are scared. Some people are staying near the door in their houses so they can get out easily.”
Mr Khanal, who has lived in Perth for 17 years, was also shocked to see the extent of the devastation.
One piece of comfort was the extent to which the people of his adopted home city had come forward to donate money and support fundraising efforts.
“I would like to thank everyone who has donated and sponsored our project and encouraged the young volunteers to contribute their time and energy for the people and society,” Mr Khanal said.
He is committed to raising further money to help with relief efforts but will focus his energy on this and has no immediate plans to return to Nepal.
