A husband penned a song about his wife and taunted her by continually singing it while he assaulted her, Perth Sheriff Court has heard.
Michael Smith feared his wife Claire was sleeping with other men behind his back and sang while he attacked her in a drunken rage.
Depute fiscal Bill Kermode told the court: “The accused and the complainer had been married for three years prior to this incident.
“She left the house to meet friends and began drinking with them. At 11pm she returned home. She was confronted by the accused who appeared to have formed the opinion she was sleeping around.”
He began calling her derogatory names and singing a song he had made up, the court heard.
The complainer was unable to sleep due to him singing the same song and he then hit her on the face.
Smith was reported to the police and when officers turned up they found the victim with a red eye and swollen nose, and when Smith was arrested he admitted being verbally abusive to his wife.
Solicitor Billy Somerville, defending, said factory worker Smith was no longer living with his wife and there was no intention to resume co-habiting.
Smith, 46, of Glenalmond Road, Rattray, admitted causing fear and alarm between August 29 and 31 by repeatedly shouting and singing obscenities at his wife.
He also admitted assaulting and injuring Claire Smith by repeatedly punching her on the face at their home in Glebe Crescent, Alyth, on August 30.
Sheriff William Wood ordered Smith to carry out 180 hours’ unpaid community work.
