A sweet shop once frequented by a Hollywood superstar has gone up for sale.

The Tuckie in Crieff is in the shadow of Morrison’s Academy, where Star Wars actor Ewan McGregor was educated.

The store is the go-to place for pupils and townsfolk looking to stock up on sugary treats and McGregor is known to have been a customer.

David Morrell, owner of The Tuckie, said the Trainspotting star once chatted with him about the store while buying ice cream at the caf he runs in MacRosty park.

“We’ve had it eight years and the business itself has been around for at least 70 or 80 years, but it could be a lot longer than that,” he said.

“When we were looking round the place there was a Tuckie compliments slip framed on the wall with Ewan McGregor’s signature on it.

“Obviously I am a big fan, lots of people in the area are, and there was a rumour that we bought The Tuckie simply because it was the greatest chance of meeting him.

“He came into the caf we have in MacRosty Park and we were talking about the shop and he remembered it. I don’t know what he used to buy.

“He’s aware it was coming up for sale but I don’t think he’ll be interested in buying it.”

David said he and his wife have decided to sell up in order to concentrate on their voluntary interests.

He said: “We’ve always felt that because of the tradition of the shop we have been more custodians for future generations rather than owners.

“I will be very sad to see it go it’s been a really important part of our lives and my children will be sad because ultimately their parents own a sweet shop and not a lot of kids can say that.

“But we feel it’s important to give back to the community. My wife and I do voluntary work for charities that are quite personal to us and we want more time to be able to do that. Running two businesses at the same time and trying to do that as well is full on.”

The Tuckie being marketed by local solicitors and estate agents, Miller Hendry, for offers over £180,000.

Alongside the sweet business, buyers will gain a two-bedroomed house attached to the shop.

A spokeswoman for the solicitors firm said: “One of the very few sweetie shops in the town to still offer sweets from the jar, its popularity as the unofficial school tuck shop has stood the test of time and will prove to be a sweet business move for someone looking for a lifestyle business.

“Catering mainly for nearby Morrison’s Academy pupils and local residents, the shop is a firm favourite at break time, lunch time and on the way home.”
