A Perth caf located in a popular park could be set to open in Easter, it has been revealed.

Redevelopment work is taking place on the South Inch pavilion, with former windows boarded up and fences placed to seal off the area.

The site, which was previously used by the South Inch Bowling Club, has lain empty since 2012 and has had a chequered history since then.

Some work took place in 2014 in order to provide basic facilities to allow a caf operator to start business there.

However, the council discovered that more work was required to upgrade the building due to vandalism and break-ins.

But a spokesman for Perth and Kinross Council has confirmed that the present refurbishment work is scheduled to finish next month, with the new tenant of the caf set to open its doors in Easter.

She said: “The council are continuing to work closely with the new tenant for the South Inch pavilion to provide a caf facility at this popular park.

“Refurbishment works to the building are due to be completed in March and the tenant is looking forward to opening the doors to customers for Easter.”

She added: “As the works are still ongoing, the final costs are not available at this time.”

Councillor Willie Wilson, who has taken a great interest in the building, and said he was “delighted” that work is under way at the South Inch pavilion.

“This scheme has been dogged by delays for three years,” he commented.

“We need to get a firmer grip of projects like this and try harder in future that work starts and finishes on time.

“This building is a great potential community asset and I want to see it being used literally for the common good of folk in Perth and Kinross in the future.

“I intend to ask for a full update at the next meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s common good fund committee on February 24.”

Barbara Renton, Perth and Kinross Council’s director of environment, previously said: “Tenanting of the building (the pavilion) will enhance the amenity of the area and improve the general environment of this part of the South Inch.”
