Fishermen who died after boat sank off Western Isles named

Two fishing boat crew members who died after the vessel sank off the Western Isles have been named by police.

They are Martin Johnstone, 29, from Halkirk, Caithness, and Chris Morrison, 27, from Stornoway, Lewis.

Their bodies were found after the Louisa sank early on Saturday morning near Mingulay.

One fisherman still missing after the incident was named as Paul Alliston, 42, from Lochs, Lewis.

A fourth crew member, Lachlan Armstrong, 27, from Stornoway, managed to swim to shore and clung to rocks until he was rescued by a lifeboat. He did not sustain any serious injuries.

Police said on Tuesday that further searches will be carried out for Mr Alliston.

Chief Inspector Gordon MacLeod said: “Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the men who sadly lost their lives as a result of this tragic incident.

“Understandably, the families involved will seek answers and we hope by carrying out a thorough investigation with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch we will understand the events which lead to the vessel sinking and the loss of life.

“The dedication and professionalism displayed by local Coastguard and Lifeboat personnel throughout the incident is to be commended.”
