Danny Alexander claims Union delivers ‘huge advantages’ for Scotland

Danny Alexander.
Danny Alexander.

Tens of thousands of Scottish jobs “depend” on a No vote in the independence referendum, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury will say today.

Danny Alexander will pitch his case for keeping Scotland part of the UK when he addresses the Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow.

Mr Alexander will say remaining in the United Kingdom “offers Scotland huge advantages in the 21st century”.

He will add: “I am one of the many who believe that the best choice for Scots is to stick with a family of nations in which we have thrived and prospered.

“In the end, nationalism is all about building barriers between peoples, whatever the cost. Liberalism is about knocking those barriers down.

“Our job, from now until the day of the referendum, will be to demonstrate why ‘Better Together’ isn’t just a slogan, but the truth.

“Tens of thousands of jobs in Scotland depend on us winning that fight.

“For the sake of our country, our children, and our grandchildren, we cannot, must not and will not lose.”

Mr Alexander will also tell attendees the party’s actions in government had proved to the British people that it could be trusted to make difficult decisions.

He will say: “The last thing Britain needs is a Labour or Conservative majority.”
