Dunfermline v Arbroath: Jefferies says memory of Lichties defeat will spur on Pars

Dunfermline boss Jim Jefferies will remind his players of a day back in August to ensure there is no complacency when Arbroath visit.

The Pars, who welcome the Lichties to East End Park on Monday night, are on a real high after a convincing 3-0 home win over Ayr United on Saturday.

At the same time as the Honest Men were being put to the sword, Arbroath were suffering a painful 3-2 loss to Angus rivals Forfar at Gayfield.

So the sides come in to the meeting in contrasting moods but Jefferies warned his players to be on their guard against a side that won 3-2 at East End Park on August 17.

“We are getting to the business end of the season and every club in the league is fighting for points,” he said.

“The pressure is on and there will be tension in games between now and the end of the season.

“I think it could be a plus for us that Arbroath beat us at home at the start of the season because that will ensure that there is no complacency from our players.

“That result will be mentioned before kick-off because it will remind them that they will need to be wary.

“We are coming in to the game on the back of a 3-0 win over Ayr United and it was more like us on Saturday because there was a real hunger.

“We need to keep that going against a team that got a great draw down at Stranraer before that Forfar result. Carrying momentum into the last section of the season is really important.”

The goals on Saturday came from Ross Forbes and Lawrence Shankland (two), players who only moved to Dunfermline last month.

Jefferies believes the strengthening of the squad during the January window is starting to really pay off for the Pars.

“These guys have helped us look more solid all over the park,” he said.

“They have pushed us on to get results like Saturday’s and the win at Forfar. We have a stronger squad now and that can only be a positive for the run-in.”

Meanwhile, Lichties boss Paul Sheerin has confirmed he will be tinkering with his team in the wake of the Angus derby defeat.

“There is not too much I can do because of numbers but there will be changes,” said Sheerin.

“We are at the stage of the season now where the weeks and matches go by quickly. Every team in the division will be battling hard for their own reasons.

“We went to East End earlier in the season and got a great win there by playing on the counter-attack.

“There is added pressure now as compared to then because of the stage of the season we are at but at least we know we have beaten Dunfermline there before.”
