Stranraer 1 Forfar 1 (Agg 1-4): Loons march on to Alloa showdown

Rab Douglas.
Rab Douglas.

He has played on some of football’s biggest stages, even performing in a UEFA Cup final for Celtic, but Rab Douglas is just as excited at the prospect of taking part in the Championship play-off final.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg, Stranraer grabbed a lifeline before the break through Chris Aitken’s penalty after Willie Gibson had been tripped by Michael Travis.

However, eight minutes after the restart Gavin Swankie made it 1-1 from a penalty after Omar Kader had been tripped by Sean Winter.

Veteran goalkeeper Douglas is now determined to savour the big occasion once again.

Douglas explained: “I am 43 years old and I do not know how many more big games like this I will play in.

“Who knows if it go well I may end up playing until I am 50! But the Alloa games seem like one of my last opportunities.

“They are huge games for Forfar and the prize is a place in the Championship, which is the place to be.”

Douglas made a couple of great saves at Stair Park on Saturday but insisted it was his colleagues who deserved the plaudits.

He added: “The team were great in the two legs against Stranraer and although I had to make a couple of saves near the end their keeper was busier.

“Alloa will be very difficult and will be strong favourites but we have a good side and I think we can compete well.”

Forfar boss Dick Campbell said: “We were under pressure at half time at 1-0 down and I decided to go for them as I thought there was no point in sitting back.

“The equaliser knocked the stuffing out of them.”

Looking ahead to the Alloa ties, Campbell said: “We are a small club so it would be like a fairytale if we win.

“Alloa are a decent side and have had some good results in the Championship so we face a difficult task.

“However, they lost at home to Brechin today so they are not unbeatable and we are going well so do not rule us out.”
