Forfar boss Dick Campbell wary of Stranraer backlash

Dick Campbell will be hoping to give another thumbs-up this afternoon.
Dick Campbell will be hoping to give another thumbs-up this afternoon.

As the longest-serving manager in the Scottish game, Forfar boss Dick Campbell knows all too well that you can take nothing for granted in football.

That belief stays the same even when your side have put themselves in the driving seat of a Championship play-off semi-final after winning the first leg against Stranraer on Wednesday night at Station Park, netting three goals without reply.

The result was all the more remarkable considering the Loons’ automatic promotion hopes had been dashed last weekend when they were defeated at home by Ayr.

Forfar will now travel to Stair Park this afternoon, knowing if they were to net first, the tie would all but be over.

However, Campbell will be warning his players that two seasons ago, it looked like they had the job done against Dunfermline when they triumphed 3-1 in the first leg of that semi-final tie.

Instead, on a day to forget for Forfar, they ended up losing the second game 6-1 after extra-time at East End Park, albeit after incredibly going down to eight men.

That history lesson means no one will counting chickens ahead of this afternoon’s match in Stranraer.

The veteran boss said: “To be honest, I never saw last Saturday’s result coming.

“However, the lads showed great mental strength to come back from what was a hammer blow losing against Ayr to produce a fantastic result against Stranraer.

“But I honestly believe we are the best team in the league when we play and we maybe could have got another couple of goals and the scoreline possibly flattered Stranraer.

“The young lad Michael Kennedy had a great game for us and we will also have Michael Dunlop back however Stuart Malcolm will miss the second leg as he is suspended.

“Obviously with us leading 3-0, if we were to get the opener and make it 4-0 it would be a huge psychological blow for them.

“But I will be warning the lads that the job is only half done.

“Two seasons ago, we were leading Dunfermline 3-1 after the first leg of our play-off but ended up losing the tie.

“Anything can happen in football and we will have to be wary of a Stranraer backlash but hopefully we can finish the job and make it through to the final.”
