Montrose boss Paul Hegarty hoping surprise draw will boost side ahead of meeting with bogey team

Montrose haven’t exactly been “quick on the draw” this season with the midweek stalemate with Annan being their first in League Two this term.

That result was a big surprise with even Links Park boss Paul Hegarty admitting it was one he had not been expecting.

However, the 1-1 draw brought to a halt a run of four straight league defeats and the manager is hoping it will provide his side with a big boost ahead of today’s game against bogey team East Fife in Methil.

Hegarty said: “To be totally honest, we haven’t been playing at all well recently and the last thing I was expecting was a draw as we hadn’t had one all season.

“Annan probably dominated the first half but we were much better in the second 45 and at the end we had a couple of chances to maybe take all three points.

“However, considering the way we have been playing, I probably would have taken a point beforehand.

“Hopefully, we can take heart from the way we played in the second half and it is important to remember that we are a very young team at the moment.

Hegarty added: “We brought Aaron Comrie in on an emergency loan from St Johnstone until the middle of January before the game and the 18-year-old did well on his debut.

“I really have to thank St Johnstone manager Tommy Wright and their Under-20 coach Alec Cleland for being great to Montrose and letting Aaron and goalie Jordan Millar come to us on loan.

“I think Aaron’s arrival gave everyone a lift with Gavin Malin in particular having his best game for us since he joined on loan from Forfar.

“The draw should give us a bit more confidence ahead of a tricky fixture against East Fife at Bayview.

“Gary Naysmith’s side have had a bit of an Indian sign over us recently, beating us 4-1 earlier in the season and we have to rectify that.

“They have been on a bit of a bad run of form recently but I know Gary will have them well organised.

“However, we are determined to finally get back to winning ways.”

Hegarty will once again be without long-term absentees Paul Watson, Ross McCord, Andrew Steeves and Terry Masson, while Gary Fraser is rated doubtful after picking up a knock against Annan.
