Stranraer 0 Brechin City 2: Craig Wighton signs off with ‘brilliant’ brace

Ray McKinnon heaped praise on Craig Wighton, who signed off his loan spell with a double to sink league leaders Stranraer.

The 17-year-old, on loan from Dundee, scored in both halves to help Brechin narrow the gap at the top to just five points.

The Brechin boss said: “He can go as far as he wants in the game. His attitude is fantastic. He is still quite slight but he has got a great desire to be competitive in the game.

“He has scored two completely contrasting goals today. His first goal is brilliant: he has cut inside, outsprinted the defender and beat the goalkeeper.

“The second goal he has come off the goalkeeper and got a header.”

The teenager was recalled by Dundee on Saturday night, but McKinnon was hopeful he could return to Brechin if Paul Hartley can find another striker.

McKinnon said: “I think it would benefit him to get a lot of games.

“Even today has been very competitive playing against two very good centre halves, and he knows he has been in a game.

“We would love to have him until the end of the season.”

Brechin broke the deadlock on the stroke of half-time with a marvellous Wighton solo goal.

The striker had plenty to do after he collected the ball near halfway, but beat two defenders and then coolly slotted the ball under the advancing David Mitchell.

The hosts tried to get back into things after the break but could not find a way through the stubborn Brechin defence.

They were made to pay with 18 minutes left when Wighton found room to nod home Bobby Barr’s corner.

McKinnon said: “I thought we played great today. We played some great football in the first half and we expected Stranraer to come at us in the second half, which they did.

“We battled hard and still played some great football on the counter-attack.”
