Montrose boss George Shields was pleased to see his side step it up a level against Annan to secure a much-needed three points at Links Park.
The League 2 victory was just the fifth home win for the Gable Endies this season and, with their position near the bottom of the table looking treacherous, victory was vital.
Annan had gone 1-0 up after the break, with some poor defending by Montrose leading to Rabin Omar curling the ball around a helpless Stuart McKenzie.
However, Montrose responded in excellent style with an equaliser less than a minute later. Allan latched on to a Banjo cross and sent the ball deflecting off Annan keeper Alex Mitchell to bounce into the net.
Two minutes later a deflected ball off a Banjo effort fell to Wood, who sent a low drive in past Mitchell from the centre of the box.
Shields said: “I thought we did really well in the second half, especially when we lost another soft goal from a throw-in. It just went right across our back-line and they’ve tapped it in.
“But to be fair we responded well and scored within a minute of that.
“That’s maybe the wee bit of luck we’ve been needing to turn our season around.
“I challenged the players to get within seven points of fourth place and they’ve done that, so I’m over the moon.”
Shields fielded three signings secured this week: Ewan Moyes, Greg Cameron and Jordan Allen, with fellow January signings Marvin Andrews and David Banjo also in the starting line-up.
Shields said: “The new guys coming in have given the club a boost.
“Even in training they’ve stepped up a level.
“The players who have been here for a while are seeing that we’re trying to improve the squad, and there’s competition for places all over the park,” he added.
