Dundee’s Benedictus unsure about Dens Park future

Alloa's Kyle Benedictus wheels away in celebration having put his side 2-0 up at Brechin.

On-loan Dundee defender Kyle Benedictus maintained a proud goal-scoring record when he netted for Alloa against Brechin on Wednesday night in the Championship play-off semi-final first leg.

The big centre-half revealed that he consistently hits the back of the net once in each of the last three campaigns.

However, this season’s solitary counter, a stoppage-time header coming after Michael Chopra’s opener, could prove crucial in helping the Wasps overcome City and progress to the final.

Benedictus said: “Brechin is always a hard place to come to. I have been here a couple of times and I know how difficult it is.

“It is a small pitch and congested but I thought the boys did well.

“We battled first and foremost and the goals came eventually.

“I thought as a back four we did well. We were tight and compact which is what you have to do as defenders.

“But we are obviously pleased to get the two goals going into Saturday.

“I always say that I get one a year! That’s three goals in the last three years.

“But you never know, I might even get another one on Saturday.

“Seriously though, the manager has stressed to us that the job is only half done, it is only half-time.

“We will have a recovery session and then be ready to go again.”

Benedictus admits he is relishing playing regular football at Alloa, firstly under Barry Smith and now new boss Danny Lennon.

However, he revealed he is still in the dark as to whether he has a future at Dens.

He said: “I am really enjoying my time at Alloa.

“I have had two managers and Barry has always been good to me.

“He gave me a chance to play games. I knew I wasn’t going to get that opportunity at Dundee and I didn’t want to sit on the bench all year.

“I think that’s 32 games I have played this season which is the most I have had so it is great to be playing week in, week out.

“The gaffer at Dundee has not spoken to me yet (about the future).

“I am not sure what will happen but I will just have to try to continue to do the best I can and see what happens from there.

“I will put myself in the shop window in case it doesn’t work out for me at Dundee.

“I have had a good time there, won a couple of trophies but if it is time to move on, then it is time to move on.

“We will just have to see what the future holds.”
