St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright rues loss of early goals

St Johnstone boss Tommy Wright lamented his side’s poor defending last night after they were beaten 2-1 by Partick Thistle at home.

Saints conceded two early goals with Callum Booth and Steven Lawless netting for the visitors.

The home side passed up glorious chances to score after that, most notably an opportunity that fell to Graham Cummins.

Saints did pull one back in the second half through Chris Kane but Thistle held on for a deserved victory.

Wright said: “There was not a lot in the first half if you look at it.

“We probably had the best chance through Graham Cummins but we have to stop shots coming in from the edge of the box. Both were too easy.

“They scored with two wonder strikes the last time they were here but we should have stopped the shots this time.

“Second half I thought we were better but we were probably guilty of not putting enough balls into the box.

“Overall, I don’t think there was a lot between the two sides but we should do better at the goals.

“It is a disappointing night for us.

“I thought for that little spell around where they scored the two goals, we looked like a team that had been beaten on Saturday rather than one that had fought for our lives and got a great point at Aberdeen.

“Little spells in games are killing us but overall this season, we have conceded too many goals.

A delighted Partick boss Alan Archibald said: “There was a real hunger, desire and tempo from the lads.

“I thought it was a magnificent first-half performance.

“We had some great chances and I have said to the lads there, they should maybe keep some of that for the other games.

“But I thought they were sensational.”
