A group advocating tactical voting against the SNP has urged supporters of Unionist parties to vote Lib Dem in North East Fife.

Forward Together, which has been active in Perthshire since March, has expanded its interests into Fife through an advert in today’s Courier.

It urges people to back Tory Alexander Stewart in Perth and North Perthshire, Labour’s Gordon Banks in Ochil and South Perthshire, and Liberal Democrat Tim Brett in North East Fife.

Mr Brett said: “We are increasingly finding that people are prepared to vote tactically and obviously I am pleased about that.

“Clearly not everyone is doing that and we won’t know until Thursday night what difference that will make.

“I am encouraged and our campaign is going very well.”

Conservative candidate Huw Bell claimed his party was gaining support as the Liberal Democrats’ was falling and said the Tories received 5,000 more votes than their coalition partners across the whole of Fife in the European Parliament elections last May.

“Only the Conservatives offer no deals with the SNP. The Lib Dems will work with anyone to get into power,” he added.

“If Forward Together had come campaigning with me they would have seen that only the Conservative and Unionists can stop the SNP in North East Fife.”

The SNP came fourth in the seat in 2010 but a poll by Tory peer Lord Ashcroft put their candidate Stephen Gethins as favourite to win when Thursday’s votes have been counted.

Mr Gethins said: “We are focused on a positive message for people to vote for the SNP for a stronger Scotland.

“Besides, I’m not sure people will be able to tell that much difference between the Tories and the Liberal Democrats.”
