A stained-glass window to commemorate people who have given the gift of life to others in Tayside is to be installed at Ninewells Hospital.

Tayside NHS Board Endowment Fund has agreed funding of £6,800 for the memorial window which has been designed by Newport artist Liz Rowley.

It will be installed in the Ninewells concourse in memory of those who have donated organs, which can mean the difference between life and death for people waiting for a transplant.

The project has been led by clinical lead for organ donation Dr Stephen Cole and chairman Sandy Watson, who are co-chairmen of the NHS Tayside Organ Donation Committee.

Local organ donation charity Revival has also provided funding of £3,500.

Organ donation in Tayside is only possible as the result of the death of a critically ill patient in the intensive care units of Ninewells or Perth Royal Infirmary.

Mr Watson said: “Members of the NHS Tayside Organ Donation Committee were unanimous in their decision to provide a permanent memorial to those who have been so selfless in making this life-saving gift to others.”

Dr Cole added: “We are extremely grateful for the funding from the Tayside NHS Board Endowment Fund and Revival and envisage that this memorial will become a focal point in the hospital for the families of deceased organ donors where they can remember and reflect, and for the recipients of organ transplantation to give thanks.”

The window will be installed later this year.
