Pie Bob’s vandal told ‘no promises’ by sheriff

Gray caused more than £1,000 of damage during his rampage at Pie Bob's.

An Arbroath man who went on a drunken rampage has been told by a sheriff that he can make “no promises” about the possible outcome of his case.

Garry Lee Gray, 26, smashed windows at Pie Bob’s in the town before jumping on a police car and smashing the windscreen and denting the roof.

He caused more than £1,000 of damage because he thought a woman working there was responsible for his parents’ marriage break-up.

Gray, of Newton Avenue, previously admitted throwing a chair along the side of a car park on June 16 and approaching a man and a woman in a threatening and aggressive manner.

He also admitted assaulting a man, repeatedly poking him on the body, causing him to step backwards, and grabbing him by the upper arm.

He further admitted threatening to damage property and threatening to burn down Pie Bob’s.

The charges also included smashing the fascia at Pie Bob’s by throwing a chair and thereafter smashing two toughened laminated glass windows by throwing chairs and a table at them, causing the table and chair to break; jumping on the bonnet of a marked police vehicle and its windscreen, causing it to smash, and then jumping on the roof, causing a large dent. He also resisted arrest by lashing out at two police officers with his arms and legs, and struggled violently.

The value of the damage to Pie Bob’s was £800 and the police car repair bill was £234.

Sentence was previously deferred for Gray to save up compensation but at during his appearance at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Tuesday, defence agent Sarah Russo said her client did not have the cash.

She said he had lost his job after his previous court appearance but had only recently gained employment again and would soon be in a position to pay.

Sheriff Gregor Murray said: “I will order you to pay compensation but I can make no other promises about the eventual outcome.”

He deferred sentence until February 18 and ordered a background report to be prepared.
