Tesco accused of sluggish response to juice complaint

An Arbroath man has criticised Tesco for “dragging their heels” over an investigation into mould he found in his pineapple juice.

Jim Robertson was left sweating for five weeks after finding a mysterious slimy item in a carton of juice he bought from the company’s Arbroath store on August 18.

He said: “It looked like a slug. It was this fleshy, black and green thing.”

The supermarket giant has now confirmed the item Jim found was mould but the former lifeboat man, 57, hit out at the company for taking so long to come back to him.

Mr Robertson said: “After I found the thing in the juice I took it back to the store in Arbroath. I received a letter from Tesco customer services apologising for what had happened.

“They suggested the sludge could have been fermentation but I wasn’t happy with that and when I went back to the store it was still there. It was just sitting in a cupboard. That was 10 days after the initial complaint was put in.

“They sent a letter apologising and said they are looking into it but I was then sent a letter that should have gone to Tesco from the company who produce the juice, asking for a sample.

“I feel like Tesco are just lying to me. I’m disgusted with the way they have treated us. How many more people could have drank from that same batch?

“It’s a health issue but the way they have dragged their heels is beyond a joke.”

He was still demanding answers when Tesco eventually came back on Wednesday and confirmed the item in the carton was mould.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We have apologised to Mr Robertson for the time it has taken to complete the investigation and for any inconvenience this may have caused him.

“We have spoken to the customer today to update him on the results of the investigation and will continue to assist in any way we can.”
