Brechin High School was set up as a rest centre for families on Friday night amid severe flooding fears.

Angus Council, Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire Rescue Service and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency were involved in a multi-agency approach to the problems after a day of heavy rain across the district.

Badly hit were the Tannadice and Finavon areas north of Forfar as well as River Street in Brechin alongside the South Esk.

As the night wore on the agencies were worried a large number of properties could be affected and staff visited the areas to offer advice and help.Follow updates on Twitter at @AngusCouncilHouseholders were advised to move belongings and themselves upstairs or to go and stay with friends or relatives.

The Brechin secondary was opened as a rest centre around 7.30pm by Angus Council but, thankfully, the flood risk began to ease before it was needed.

Staff visited the Tannadice and Finavon areas around 8pm, as water levels peaked on the River South Esk.

A similar effort was put in place in Brechin’s River Street where water levels further downstream on the South Esk were expected to peak around 11pm.

At around that time the following roads were closed due to flooding:A93 at Mains of Darilzion Strathtay and Pitnacree A937 Brechin to Marykirk The Den at Letham The Drovers at Memus Ardrovie at BrechinHowever, around midnight the council was able to confirm the flooding fears were easing and the rest centre was closing having not been needed.

Council officials asked anyone with concerns to contact them on 08452 777 778 or Police Scotland on 101.
