Army will have first say on drink-driving soldier who crossed Tay Bridge in wrong direction

A Black Watch soldier who drove the wrong way over the Tay Road Bridge at 120mph has had his punishment postponed while he is disciplined by the army.

Daniel McLean, 24, was more than twice over the drink-drive limit when he committed the offence.

He claimed he put his foot down to get off the bridge as quickly as he could after realising he was on the wrong carriageway.

He then lost control of the car and narrowly avoided another vehicle before mounting a grass verge.

McLean is based at Fort George Barracks in Inverness and at Dundee Sheriff Court Sheriff George Way deferred sentence for four weeks to await the outcome of the army procedure.

It is expected army bosses will demote McLean to the rank of private as a result of his actions on June 21.

McLean, of Kirkbank, Dumfries, previously admitted a charge of dangerous driving on the Tay Road Bridge and the roundabout junction of the A92 at the B946 Newport/Tayport road.

He also admitted driving with excess breath alcohol (52mics) on the same date.

Sentence was further deferred until December 17.
