City council ready to respond to Riverside Drive concerns

Changes at Riverside Drive have proved controversial.
Changes at Riverside Drive have proved controversial.

Road safety concerns on one of the main arteries into Dundee are to be addressed after repeated complaints about the new design.

The “dangerously long” slip road on the newly resurfaced Riverside Drive is to be changed as part of remedial works to be carried out by Tayside Contracts.

The area is coned off to stop drivers mistakenly believing the stretch is dual carriageway and struggling to get back into the main road.

Councillor Fraser Macpherson has been campaigning for the changes following the resurfacing and redesign work carried out last autumn and he has welcomed the news.

He said: “There have been a number of issues raised by constituents, but the one outstanding road safety aspect of particular concern is the coned off slip road, just west of the rail bridge.

“The complaint I have heard quite often is that people have trouble entering and exiting the rail goods yard because of the speed of the traffic.

“A lot of HGVs use the road and exiting safely has become an issue.

“The problem is a design one in that the slip road is far too long.

“It goes on forever and from a safety perspective drivers coming along Riverside Drive go into the left lane, thinking the road has become dual carriageway, then realise they should be in the other lane and it can be dangerous trying to get back out.”

While cones have been used to keep drivers away, Mr Macpherson said these are often squashed or blown away, so plans to hatch the section instead are welcome.

Plans involve an edge of road hatching to replace the temporary coning and installation of end-of-lane bollards installed to make it clear that vehicles should not use the section of road.

This section of road will remain for the time being due to road drainage issues which would incur significant costs to rectify.

There are also plans to install illuminated bollards at the Tesco roundabout, and paint additional arrows to make clear there are diverging opportunities at the Riverside approach.

Mr Macpherson added: “I have made clear to the council that a permanent solution for the coned off areas on the north side, east of the rail goods yard, must be found as soon as possible.”

The works have been approved by Dundee City Council.
