Athletes leaving their base at the Apex hotel in Dundee to travel to Glasgow for the opening cermony on Wednesday.

An alert was sparked after live ammunition was taken out of Barry Buddon Shooting Centre by a Commonwealth Games competitor, The Courier can reveal.

A source at the games said a competitor had taken the live ammunition back to their accommodation at the Apex Hotel on a National Express Dundee bus.

The facility for checking the ordnance was not in place at the Barry Buddon gates when the competitor left the centre after practice on Saturday.

A spokesman for the Commonwealth Games confirmed the ammunition was found on a bus and was dealt with appropriately.

A statement read that: “Ammunition was recovered from a bus which had been travelling between the Apex Hotel and the Barry Buddon Games Venue in Dundee.

“There are no suspicious circumstances. Buses are searched regularly each day to make sure there is no chance of anything being left on the buses before they return to their normal routes.”

Police Scotland confirmed they had been alerted to the ammunition being discovered after the situation was picked up by security measures in place for the games.

A spokesman for the force said: “This was quickly picked up by the security measures in place for the games and the cartridge was placed in an approved secure area.’

A spokeswoman for National Express Dundee said: “As a number of our buses are currently involved in transportation for Commonwealth Games athletes between Dundee and Carnoustie, we have stepped up the security and inspection procedures for these vehicles.”
