Community rally round Dundee family who ‘lost everything’ in flat blaze

Colleen, with Lexi, Chloe, Connor and Kyle, has praised the amazing help she has received.

A mother-of-four has told of the nightmare her family has been through after a fire ripped through their home destroying many of their possessions.

Colleen Petro, 33, had to rush three of her children out of their Dura Street flat after discovering her boiler had burst into flames.

Son, Connor, 14, was in the bath when the blaze broke out and escaped wearing nothing but a towel, while daughters, Chloe, three, and two-year-old Lexi were still in their pyjamas when Colleen carried them out.

Younger son Kyle, 6, had just been dropped off at school and avoided the drama.

Despite being briefly allowed back into the flat for a few essentials, Colleen said the vast majority of their belongings have been lost.

She said: “We’ve lost everything, it is all ruined.

“All the kids’ toys, clothes and beds are gone, it’s a complete nightmare.

“But I have to remember that belongings can be replaced and people can’t, so I’m just glad my kids are safe.

“Fortunately, my two girls are too young to realise what is going on, but Connor is distraught.

“He’s at that age where he is into nice clothes and is gutted that he’s lost them all.”

Colleen added that she has already received “amazing” help from family, friends and even people she does not know following the blaze on Wednesday.

Colleen and her family have been given temporary accommodation elsewhere in Dundee, until her flat is habitable again.

A Facebook page has been set up for donations to the family, particularly children’s clothes.
