The wife of a Dundee man who was killed in a crash last month donated his funeral collection to Dundee’s Maggie’s Centre in honour of their best man.

Judy Anderson and her husband Derrick, 61, were in a collision with a tractor on the Coupar Angus to Dundee road. Both were taken to hospital but Mr Anderson lost his life after the accident.

Shortly before his death, Mr Anderson had been supporting his best friend Alex Watson who received a diagnosis of cancer of the gullet three months ago.

Judy said donating the collection of £434 to Maggie’s will help support people like Mr Watson throughout Dundee, something she said her late husband would have wanted.

She said: “When my husband found out about the diagnosis he was really upset because Alex was his best friend.

“They went to school together, he was best man at our wedding and they played snooker together every Sunday.”

Mr Watson is in the early stages of treatment and has had chemotherapy and is due to have an operation soon.

Judy said: “I’m a nurse myself and I love helping people and Derrick was exactly the same.

“He was such a caring person. I know this is what Derrick would have wanted.”

The money will go towards running services at the Dundee centre for cancer sufferers and their families.

Claire Heaton, Maggie’s fundraising manager, said it was a “very generous” donation.

She said: “It is very generous of Judy to have chosen Maggie’s and I am sure her friend is really pleased with the fact she has chosen to support Maggie’s because of what he is going through.

“Any donation is used by Maggie’s to help people living with cancer and their families, which can cover anything from support groups to nutrition workshops and anything else that helps people.”
