Claypotts junction in Dundee where work is to start at the end of the month lasting five weeks.

Commuters travelling through Claypotts Road junction could face five weeks of traffic misery when a major Dundee artery route undergoes refurbishment.

Rush-hour drivers face a “nightmare” journey into and out of Dundee city centre when the works begin on the A92 Arbroath Road/Claypotts Road junction on Monday October 27.

The junction is a key section in what is the busiest main thoroughfare for Angus commuters travelling into Dundee, meaning that traffic gridlock is a near inevitability.

Travellers from Broughty Ferry, Monifieth, Arbroath and Carnoustie could all be badly hit due to a variety of closures and turn restrictions being put in place. The diversions are to allow the area to undergo necessary repairs, with the maintenance work scheduled to last for five weeks.

As well as vehicles from Arbroath Road and Claypotts Road, the junction is hit by traffic coming from Balgillo Road and Baldovie Road.

One commuter, who uses Balgillo Road to travel from Broughty Ferry into the city centre for work every day, admits he is expecting heavy delays that will play havoc with his daily commute.

He said: “It is going to be an absolute nightmare. I always travel on this route and it’s going to cause me terrible problems every day.

“I’m going to have to plan ahead to make sure I know which different routes I can take as I don’t want to end up being late for my work.”

With the clocks going back on Sunday October 26, drivers are expecting a few dark trips to and from Dundee during the works.

Another traveller said: “This is going to cause me serious problems. No doubt I’m going to have to leave earlier to ensure I have enough time to beat the traffic.

“But then everybody will be thinking the same thing.

“The streets around that area could end up being rammed with traffic and it’s going to be terrible trying to get through,” he said.

Elsewhere in the city, Camperdown Road is also set to close on Monday October 27 for five days to allow for the installation of a pedestrian island.
