Rail strike could play havoc with Dundee fans’ plans for Julian Speroni testimonial at Crystal Palace

Rail strike could play havoc with Dundee fans’ plans for Julian Speroni testimonial at Crystal Palace

Dundee FC fans heading to London for Julian Speroni’s testimonial have had their travel plans thrown into jeopardy by a proposed rail strike.

Members of the RMT union are to strike on Monday and Tuesday over a pay dispute. Scotland’s transport minister expects the action to have a “significant impact” here, and some services have already been cancelled.

The strike coincides with goalkeeper Speroni’s testimonial match, due to take place on Tuesday.

Speroni who currently plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League spent three seasons with the Dark Blues between 2001 and 2004 and the Dundee club was chosen as the opposition for the game at Selhurst Park in London.

The chairman of Dundee Supporters Association, Kenny Ross, said many Dundee fans he had spoken to were looking at alternative travel arrangements. But he was worried the financial burden would be too much for many of them.

“We have sold around 1,300 tickets and at least 50% of them would be going by train, which is a terrific effort but there may be a large percentage of people who won’t be able to make it down now.

“It would be a real shame if we couldn’t get all the fans who have bought tickets to the match. I have had to book a flight myself, to be safe.”

A Network Rail spokesman said: “We understand the disruption the planned strike will have on passengers. Discussions are ongoing to avert industrial action.”
