Councillors have rubber-stamped plans for a new secondary school in Levenmouth.

The new building, which will see the merger of Buckhaven and Kirkland high schools and accommodate 1,800 pupils, is scheduled to be complete in 2016.

Contractors have already arrived on site at the existing Buckhaven High School, in Methilhaven Road. Once the new school is built, the old building will be demolished to make way for sports pitches.

Councillors on Fife Council’s central area planning committee unanimously approved the proposal. However, concerns were raised about conditions relating to transportation, light pollution from floodlights and the position of a chimney stack.

David Graham called for a toucan crossing to replace the zebra crossing at Grieve Street.

He said: “That crossing would be the busiest of them all and on the basis of the recommendation here, it would not have any upgrade at all.

“At the moment all three crossings at Methilhill are zebra crossings, all of which have had high numbers of near misses witnessed by the local community in the recent past. Changing this crossing to a toucan crossing would avoid that occurring.”

John Beare and Ross Vettraino called for conditions relating to the chimney stack and floodlighting to be clarified.

Mr Vettraino said the condition relating to the position of the stack, stating it would be three metres above the roof, was ambiguous because there was no point of reference.

He said: “My view is that planning conditions should be precise, clear and consequently without anonymity of any kind. These conditions aren’t clear enough, Mr Chairman.”

Committee chairman Tom Adams said he would take Mr Vettraino’s comments on board.
