Citizens Advice raise poverty fear with price of BT calls hike

Debt experts have warned a significant rise in the cost of telephone calls could be enough to plunge hard-pressed people into poverty.
In what will be a blow to households already struggling with the crushing burden of soaring utility bills, BT is alerting millions of customers to a 6.5% hike in prices.Perth Citizens Advice Bureau manager Sandy Watts said the announcement filled her with dismay and left her with grave concerns for many people.
“I find myself shocked by BT’s decision,” she told The Courier.
“Rural areas will be particularly badly affected. If you live in the wilds and have no access to a telephone you can become extremely isolated.
“If you do not have access to technology in this day and age then you can find it difficult to participate in day-to-day life.
